Everyone knows the cliche expression “wherever you go, there you are”. Well, where I want to go, right now anyway, is Mexico. It’s hot there, almost always sunny, and the beaches, diving, gourmet food, tours of Mayan ruins and dirt cheap airfare are calling my name. But the allure of a last minute tropical getaway isn’t just about all the fun things there are to do in Puerto Vallarta. It’s also about getting away from here.
I know, I know, this blog is all about how much I love living in a small rural community in central Alberta. It’s about how my wife and I moved here to be closer to family, to a place where we can finally settle down and plant our roots and build a home and a family. And we’re doing those things, but it doesn’t always mean that it’s perfect or easy. Some days we both just feel like getting away. Some days we remember all the good times we had in Halifax and almost wish we still had our cute little apartment there, with our Halifax friends, date nights at our favourite Halifax restaurant, shows at the Neptune Theatre, walks along the harbourfront boardwalks, singing in the St Andrews Church choir. They were good times. But it’s pretty easy to remember the best about the past and forget that no place is perfect. And when you do move, chances are that the “stuff” you had in your life that wasn’t so hot tagged along and came with you. In truth we can’t ever really “get away from it all”.
But, sometimes you do need a change of scenery. Getting away for a time can give you a chance to find some perspective, to reflect on life, disassemble everything in your mind and put it all back together again in hopes of discovering something about yourself, about where you’re going, what’s important and whether you’re on track. I think Kelly and I are on track. I love our new home, I love being close to both our families. I love the life that we have together. I do wish more of my friends lived closer, but hey there’s always skype!
So we’re planning a trip to Mexico. Just for a week or so. Not to run away from anything, not to escape the doldrums of a boring, unsatisfying life. Just to have some fun, to gain some perspective, to just get away together and concentrate on each other, with nothing familiar to distract us.
