For a long time now I’ve wished I was more flexible. I’ve also often thought it would sure be nice to have a rock hard six pack, especially right now after eating 3 turkey dinners this Thanksgiving weekend. I feel like I put on 40 lbs in 4 days. I guess yoga is now one more thing I can add to the long list of things I’m thankful for this Thanksgiving. Kelly and I joined a beginners class here in Bashaw last week and today we had our third class. It’s great. After every class I feel awakened, refreshed, opened up, stretched and aware. I can already see how doing yoga regularly will really help me with the flexibility, hopefully stopping my hips from cracking and popping like an 90 year old’s. It really gets me to focus on my breathing, reigning in my ever-wandering and busy mind. And suddenly, when you’re not thinking about all the things you have to do that day or letting your mind fret about things outside of your control, you become incredibly aware of your own body, which muscles are pulling and which are sore, where your weight is being supported, and the strain that you’re putting on your lower back or in your neck or joints. Simply changing the way you stand, your posture and the position of your spine, tail bone and hips can make your entire body feel totally different. I find that ever since our first class I now catch myself numerous times throughout the day correcting my posture and standing up straighter. And every time I do, I feel better. No rock hard six pack yet, but it’s coming.
